Hand hewn skins are for the times you only need one face. They’re single-sided hand hewn boards — for trim, mantel faces, wrapping a post, accenting a header, or any place a full box beam is more than the job needs.

When should I choose a skin over a box beam?
When only one face shows — a flat wall accent, a mantel face, trim across a header. If the wood needs to turn a corner or read as a full beam, that’s a 2, 3, or 4-sided box beam instead. Not sure? Send a photo of the spot.
How do skins install?
They mount flat to the surface — simpler than a full beam. Most installers use construction adhesive plus trim fasteners; holes fill with a color-matched sawdust-and-glue blend just like our beams.
What sizes and finishes are available?
Widths of 6″, 8″, 10″, and 12″, with raw thickness averaging 3/4″ to 2″. Order them raw, planed and straight edged, sanded — or all three. Same reclaimed white oak, pine, or mixed hardwoods as our box beams.

Read this before you order raw. Raw skins come off real beams, and those beams are often bowed, twisted, or carry pocket holes. Raw thickness runs anywhere from 3/4″ to 2″ and varies board to board — there are no exceptions to that. If your install needs a consistent thickness, because the skin butts into trim or casing or sits in a reveal, order it planed and straight edged instead. We would rather tell you now than have you find out on the wall.
Installing Hand Hewn Skins
A skin is a single hand hewn face, so it goes on like a facing rather than a box. Most customers use a finish carpenter; we supply the wood and don’t install.
- Acclimate first. Two to three days in the room, off the floor, in a dry well-ventilated space.
- Fasten to something solid. Framing, blocking, or a substrate — construction adhesive plus brad nails or trim screws.
- Keep fasteners in the shadow lines where the axe marks fall, so the heads disappear.
- Fill the holes with the sawdust-and-glue blend that ships with your order.
- Cut ends square where the skin meets a wall, post or corner.
