Solid hand hewn beams are the real, whole timber — pulled from 1800s barns intact, axe marks and all. No construction, no assembly: this is the beam the barn was built with, cut to your length.
Color: wild and unmatched — browns, greys, and chocolate, every beam different. That variation is the point.
Texture: original hand hewn axe work, 120 to 200 years old.
Species: white oak, pine, and mixed hardwoods, as the barns give them to us.

Honest Material Notes
Antique timbers carry their history: checking, nail holes, mortise pockets, and color that shifts from beige to deep brown along one face. That is the product, not a defect.
Sizes vary the way real hewn timber does — we confirm actual dimensions on every order before anything ships.

Should I choose a solid beam or a box beam?
If the beam needs to hold something up — or you want the full weight and mass of genuine timber — go solid. If it’s decorative, a box beam gives the same look at a fraction of the weight and installs far easier. Not sure? Send a photo of the spot and we’ll tell you straight.
Will my solid beams match each other?
No — and we say that proudly. Solid beams come out of the barn as they are: every shade of brown, grey, and chocolate in one order. If your project needs matched, consistent color, that’s what our box beams are built for.
Can solid beams be used structurally?
They’re genuine solid timber, so yes — many of ours go into load-bearing use. Sizing and load decisions belong to your builder or engineer; we’ll supply the dimensions and any detail they need about the beam.
Sizes We Offer
These are the sizes we build most often. If what you need isn’t listed, ask — we cut to order.

- Heights: 4″, 6″, 8″, 10″, 12″, 14″ and 16″
- Lengths: up to 50 feet
- Species: hand hewn mixed hardwood, hand hewn pine, hand hewn white oak, and resawn white oak
One thing to know about rectangular sizes. On hand hewn beams that are not square — an 8×12, say — one face is sawmill-cut from a square timber rather than hand hewn. That side is usually placed up or down, and sanding with polyurethane blends it into the original patina. Resawn white oak is sawn on all four sides by design, so this doesn’t apply. We’ll always tell you before we cut.
Sanding and polyurethane are available as add-ons on solid beams and mantels.
